The report, issued on May 16 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, found that people with more education and higher incomes suffer from fewer chronic diseases and live longer. Conversely, the report indicates those who are less educated and poorer have fewer chances to live healthy lifestyles and more often engage in unhealthy habits like smoking, avoiding exercise and eating unhealthy foods.

My son Andrew is 15 years old, which places him squarely in the ever-confusing, ever-shifting universe of the teenager. He is also a type 1 diabetic – has been since he was five years old. At a time in life when he is constantly trying to test and define his limits, then, being forced to check his blood sugar several times a day and administer doses of insulin doesn’t exactly square with his ideas of personal freedom.

The atrium at the Gaylord Resort in Washington D.C. was brimming with Christmas spirit last week, and teeming with families looking to attend the nearby ice show or meet up with Santa and, for some reason, Shrek.
