Beware of big data surprises

Maybe I worry too much, but I do worry about rushing to conclusions when the consequences are as important as they are in health and healthcare. Big data is big time. With the enhanced ability to capture data from everywhere, with the enhanced ability to store it and with more and more tools to analyze it, the allure and potential of new discoveries and new breakthroughs is amazing.

I love my gadgets. I like that my car knows when I’m close. I like talking to my phone and having it answer. I even like the ancient-but-oh-so-convenient remote control, for my TV.

mHealth and the consumer

There’s no doubt that the mHealth market is growing rapidly. Chilmark Research projects that by 2017, the market will exceed $1.1 billion. But according to IMS Research’s Wireless Opportunities in Health and Wellness Monitoring – 2012 Edition, medical devices bought by consumers to self-monitor their health will account for more than 80 percent of all wireless-enabled consumer medical devices in 2016. That’s reasonable, rational, understandable and unfortunate.

iMedicalApps recently reported that EveryMove has received $2.6 million from a number of investors, including some insurance companies. I cite this because it is an example of one of the ways “value” can be perceived and demonstrated in the mHealth space.

I don’t know of an area in health that has generated more excitement about its potential than mHealth. There is something magical that happens in discussions about mHealth. People start to believe in all of the wonderful things that a phone, together with the right gadget, can do – remind me to take my medicine, monitor my vitals, inform my doctor when something goes wrong and just plain keep me healthy.
