RFID delivers ROI for Massachusetts General Hospital

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is paying off for Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In 2009, MGH fully implemented an RFID-enabled supply automation system to store, track and manage medical devices and supplies used for neuro interventional procedures in its IR division within the Department of Radiology.

Following a six month post-implementation analysis, MGH has realized an increase in charge capture accuracy of nearly 25% by tracking the use of high cost items through technology provided by Pittsburgh-based Mobile Aspects, a healthcare technology supplier focused on delivering clinical process improvement systems using RFID and other advanced automation technologies for interventional and surgical specialty care providers.

According to a statement released by Mobile Aspects, the hospital’s clinical supply chain processes also were optimized to decrease the occurrence of special requisitions by 50% through the avoidance of stock-outs and rush orders.

The total benefits realized by MGH are valued at nearly $1 million annually.
