Qualcomm announces investment in AirStrip Technologies

AirStrip Technologies, which develops technology that enables access to patient data through such devices as smartphones and tablets, has received a strategic investment from Qualcomm’s new Qualcomm Life Fund.

The San Diego-based telecommunications giant unveiled its new Qualcomm Life subsidiary at last Year’s mHealth Summit, marking its official entry into the rapidly developing mHealth landscape. Included in that announcement was news that Qualcomm Ventures – which was launched in 2000 with an initial $500 million allocation – would target investments in venture-backed wireless health companies and start-up through the $100 million Qualcomm Life Fund.

AirStrip, based in San Antonio, Texas, has developed a platform that connects clinicians to patient monitoring data – such as heart tracings, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation, weight and pulse – taken from EMRs, bedside monitors and devices and laboratory and other clinical information systems. That data can be accessed via a mobile device, giving physicians instant access to enhance clinical decisions.

“AirStrip Technologies has developed and implemented the most sophisticated suite of native mobile solutions available today,” said AirStrip CEO Alan Portela in a press release. “We recognize where the future lies for mobility in healthcare: Erasing the boundaries to more effectively diagnose and treat patients throughout the continuum of care. We are pleased to announce this investment by the Qualcomm Life Fund, which acknowledges the game-changing potential presented by the AirStrip platform.”

“Smartphone adoption by physicians is among the highest in any given profession. Airstrip Technologies' solutions can increase efficiency in a resource-constrained healthcare system, improving patient care and communications while reducing medical errors,” added Jack Young, senior manager at Qualcomm Ventures. “As the demand for home monitoring and wireless health solutions increases, Airstrip Technologies and Qualcomm Life are well positioned to help customers and patients address this need.”

AirStrip’s platform will leverage Qualcomm’s new 2net hub, a plug-and-play connectivity gateway that was unveiled at the mHealth Summit this past December in Washington D.C. and which can collect home-based data through wireless devices with AirStrip’s applications.

The two companies will be displaying at this year’s HIMSS12 Conference and Exhibition, scheduled for Feb. 20-24 in Las Vegas. AirStrip will be featured in the Qualcomm Pavilion as well as the Intelligent Hospital Pavilion.
