Anton/Bauer MPS Receives US Patent for Hotswap Mobile Power System

Anton/Bauer MPS, a Vitec Group company and a premier provider of mobile power systems for the medical technology industry, is pleased to announce that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded the company a U.S. patent (patent number pending) for its HotSwap Mobile Power System, used with such mobile medical devices as workstations-on-wheels. The newly patented Anton/Bauer MPS HotSwap system is a complete package that provides mobile medical device users with more freedom, as they no longer need to plug the equipment they are using into a wall outlet to recharge the equipment’s internal battery.

Medical carts and other mobile medical devices are critical to today’s healthcare facilities. As hospitals continue to transition through meaningful use requirements while battling the 2014 full-integration deadline, many have realized the importance of a high-quality battery system. Some hospitals have spent millions on purchasing patient monitoring equipment to only find that the battery failed before the caregiver could complete rounds. The HotSwap system consists of Anton/Bauer DIONIC Logic Series batteries, InterActive chargers and the Gold Mount system, which provides users with nearly 100 percent uptime—since Anton/Bauer Logic Series batteries can be swapped in and out without having to shut down the equipment being powered. This allows users to continuously use the cart with one charged set batteries while the other set of batteries are recharging.

The HotSwap system also provides medical facilities with a budget-friendly solution: Rather than replacing an entire cart or battery system, users can update individual batteries and/or chargers one piece at a time. There is no need to purchase a new system. Avoiding this expense can help keep hospital costs down.

“Anton/Bauer MPS is proud to offer the patented technology behind its HotSwap Mobile Power System to the medical industry, knowing that its use provides hospital staff members with a reliable and easy-to-use power solution,” says Patrick Ney, vice president, Anton/Bauer MPS. “The system design is simple, yet very efficient and safe, which is critical. At Anton/Bauer MPS, we are firm believers in this approach when it comes to technology, and that is reflected in all of the work that we do. We are thrilled that our technology was recognized by the USPTO and look forward to providing additional innovative power solutions to the medical industry in the future.”

The technology behind the HotSwap Mobile Power System has been available in the professional video market for nearly a decade. Its primary purpose for that industry has been to enable camera operators or equipment operators to continually run their equipment without having to shut the camera or equipment off to change the battery. They can easily swap out a battery while waiting for a spontaneous event to occur, such as a city’s mayor leaving an important trial or the match-winning golf swing during the PGA tour.

With input from medical cart manufacturers, hospitals and other medical-technology experts, the engineers at Anton/Bauer MPS took this same HotSwap capability and developed it specifically for use in the medical industry. This is a critical development because, with the 2014 deadline for mandated use of EHRs fast approaching, more and more medical professionals are turning to mobile medical devices.
