Social Media is not only a tool used by the mHIMSS community members to communicate information and ideas on what’s hot in mobile and wireless technology, it is also a valuable tool for health organization communication. As mobile and social media technologies evolve hospitals and health systems have unprecedented opportunities to engage with their patients in real-time meaningful ways. This section will review new social media tactics and features such as geo-location and their impact on the healthcare ecosystem.

In 2010 the Emerging Media Task Force conducted an online survey of SHSMD members, exploring the tools and trends the membership was seeing on the ground and on the horizon and wishing to know more about. We asked members how they were coping with a changing landscape their departments weren’t always configured to handle. Open-ended questions were paired with rankings of dozens of tools and trends, from augmented reality to recruitment. The 100+ responses were candid, informative, and extremely insightful as a snapshot in time.  More
